1000 days to get it right
for every child

Children living in poverty is a serious issue in New Zealand.

When children are raised in poverty it has alarming economic and social costs. It doesn't just affect the children involved. It affects the entire country.

CHILD POVERTY COSTS NEW ZEALAND EST. $6B PER YEAR

UNICEF NZ is a core member of the Every Child Counts coalition, which commissioned Infometrics to prepare two reports in 2011:

1000 days to get it right for every child, and

He Ara Hou: The Pathway Forward.

These reports highlight the cost of child poverty in New Zealand.

They estimate that $6b per year is spent in New Zealand to counter the effects of children raised in poverty. They make a strong argument for increased investment in the first three years of a child’s life to save the huge costs of remedial services.

1,000 DAYS TO GET IT RIGHT

"I,000 days to get it right for every child" focuses on the importance of investing in the first 1,000 days of a child's life. This is the most critical phase of a child's development. As the reports (above) show, if we do not get it right during the first 1,000 days the costs are significant for the child, the community and the country.

Help us and the Every Child Counts coalition as we work to get it right for Kiwi Kids!
